The voice is deep for a child of eleven, but I recognize it immediately. I tear my eyes from the screen to the chubby kid standing before me. I frown.
"Yep," I say. "Cost me a lot. You can't touch it."
The gleeful smile vanishes. "Why not?"
"You'd break it."
"No I won't. May I please sit?"
I don't like the tone but say nothing as the girl sits on my futon. I pretend to type something while ignoring the kid who sits beside me, awkwardly twiddling her thumbs like an eighty-year-old gym teacher and restraining herself from asking questions. She's not stupid, I think. Just sensitive and lacking in common sen


Malaria I spent the day in the library, perusing titles and pulling out old tomes that had rested, untouched for years. A corner table was my refuge where I hunched down in a padded chair and flipped through stiff yellowing pages. Rough paper under my fingertips, the familiar musty smell, dust. I drank it in. Words and thoughts soaked into my mind: obsolete facts but endearing ideas. Love, peace, hate, fear. All of these relevant throughout each era, all perpetually grating on the contemporary mind. I explored them all through old textbooks, poetry, diaries, while reveling in how modern these writers felt. Every writer is modern. Every writer believeMalaria by ~LessienMoonstar
